Micro Volunteering
Just finished a podcast from SXSW. While I still want to go, I’m convinced I learn as much from listening to the podcasts as I would from the event.
A questioner mentioned his organization and their Volunteer Now! application. It doesn’t sound like they have fully developed the application, but it is a great idea.
In short you use your mobile device to indicate you have some unexpected free time. Because the device knows who you are and where you are it shows volunteer opportunities that are relevant to the moment. The website lists some great scenarios.
I can see this being very useful in urban areas where people can do walk up service, but also for more specialized service. For example, if I had 30 minutes I could update a groups style sheet to fix a common IE 6 error, and we all know that is some real service.
